He died that summer in an automobile accident. Pelawa, a forward, was named Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey in 1986 as the top high-school player in the state.

BILL MASTERTON (NHL, Minnesota North Stars)
Died at the age of 29. On Jan. 13, 1968, Masterton was checked by the Oakland Seals’ Larry Cahan and Ron Harris and fell backwards on to the ice head first. He sustained a massive brain hemorrhage and died two days later, on Jan. 15, 1968, without regaining consciousness.

HANK GATHERS (NCAA basketball, Loyola Marymount)
Died at the age of 23. Gathers, of Loyola Marymount University, collapsed during a college basketball game in March 1990, and died shortly afterward. An autopsy found that he suffered from a heart-muscle disorder - hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. more

Kevin Frisch: This year’s legislative muddle

The issue is different, and the chief player is different, but darned if there isn’t more than a hint of deja vu regarding New York Gov. David Paterson’s recent directive on gay marriages.

The new governor — who is spending political capital as if he were his predecessor at the Emperors Club — last month issued a memo requiring state agencies to recognize gay marriages performed out of state. (It’s really not that hard. If I see two guys holding hands, and they’re wearing wedding bands, I recognize it. It’s a gay marriage.)

Paterson’s directive, according to the Associated Press, which words these things better than I do, “orders state agencies, including those governing insurance and health care, to immediately recognize same-sex marriages legally performed elsewhere as valid in New York.”

All well and good, right? Wrong?

Republican legislators quickly weighed in with their opposition. more

Gopinath’s new cargo venture takes off

This aircraft will return to India in December and then the Deccan Air Cargo and Logistics will start its operations.

The $200 million venture company is being launched with an initial investment from Gopinath. The company is 100% owned by him and has ordered nine planes, including three A-310s from Air India. Gopinath, who is currently vice chairman of the Kingfisher-Deccan airline, has got non-compete clause for his new venture with the combine.

Sources said a number of private players have already expressed to partner with the new venture that will be funded by debt and equity. Gopinath said, “It’s the beginning of a great and exciting new journey and the first plane has been sent for conversion to freighter.” His new venture comes at a time when his airline’s merger with Kingfisher is on the verge of completion and is all set to be renamed as Kingfisher as Deccan will lose its identity. more

Car crash policeman back at work

Senior Constable Col Turner was injured when the police car he was a passenger in, rolled last November, while pursuing a vehicle.

Canobolas local area commander Superintendent Mark Szalajko was driving at the time of the crash and pleaded guilty to a charge of negligent driving in April.

He was convicted and fined $200 last month.

Superintendent Szalajko is currently on leave and it is unclear when he will return to work.

But the area’s acting commander, Brett Smith, says Constable Turner, who was a highway patrol officer at the time of the crash, has returned to work and will gradually be eased back into full duties.

Big sales demand a big plan, shoppers say

McKay, the Black Friday pro that she is, offered one tip to shoppers. Don’t forget your neighborhood pharmacies. (Walgreens is among McKay’s favorite spots for stocking stuffers.)

She likes them so much she’ll be at a 24-hour location, with her mom, tonight just after midnight.

“I love to save money,” she said. “I look forward to it. It’s tons of fun.”

How To Have A Successful Charity Fund Raising Event

For non profit fund raising to be legitimate, you really do need a board of directors. When you’re choosing board members for your non profit charity fundraising, you have to choose wisely. Charity fund raising board members can come from any background but there are some points to keep in mind. Each should bring a special ability with them and it is very important that they are committed to your purpose. Try to find people that are fairly low key in your community. These will be the ones that are interested in your non profit fund raising.

This board will set the rules of the non profit organization but they will also be responsible and accountable in a lot of things in the non-profit fundraising. They will have to make the policies, budgeting, planning, the non profit fund raising itself, and human resources. Your non profit charity fund raising also needs an executive director. This job will require a skilled person and when you decide on this position for charity fund raising, he/she should have the freedom to lead the rest and do what is best for your non- profit fund raising.

So as you can see depending on the size of your charity fund raising, it is going to be a job in itself to get set up. There will be a lot of work for everyone involved with the non profit fund raising, but it will be worth while when you accomplish your goal at the end.

Preserve Equity, Build for the Future Using a 1031 Tax Exchange

Thinking of trading up on an investment resort property? If so, look into 1031 Tax Exchanges (based on IRS Code Section 1031), which allow taxpayers to defer taxes on capital gains resulting from the sale of investment real estate, often a sizable sum since combined Federal and State taxes can run as high as 38 percent.

With an exchange, owners are able to preserve equity, while still selling the property. The underlying concept is that an exchange of like-kind property for like-kind property does not generate funds, which can be taxed since the profits go directly into the new or replacement property. To accomplish this, sellers hire a Qualified 1031 Intermediary (QI) to document the sale as an exchange and to receive the funds from the sale. The QI then delivers the funds directly to the closing agent for the replacement property who deeds the property to the taxpayer.

Central to a 1031 Exchange is the interpretation of like-kind property. While the common assumption is that like-kind implies land for land or a condominium for a condominium swap, the interpretation of like kind is actually less literal. Rather, it defines like kind as meaning that both the replacement and the original property must be used as an investment. So land, condominiums, single-family homes and motels can all be exchanged for one another as long as they are used in the exchanger’s business or held as an investment. The amount of debt held on the replacement property must be the same as the amount of debt on the original.

1031 Exchanges are complex mechanisms and like all IRS requirements very specific. For example, exchangers have 45 days from closing to identify properties they intend to purchase and 180 days to complete the purchase. Purchase and Sale agreements must include verbiage indicating the intent to affect a 1031 Exchange.

The 45-day time frame used to be onerous for sellers. Now, they can opt for a Reverse Exchange, in which an additional third party called “the exchange accommodation title holder” (EAT) acquires title to the replacement property until the original property sells. Reverse Exchanges shift the 45- and 180-day time frame to the selling side of the transaction. With an Improvement Exchange, which also uses an EAT to hold the replacement property, sellers can build investment properties from the ground up or improve existing properties. The improvements have to be built and paid for during the 180-day period.

If you are interested in a 1031 Exchange, the first step is to consult your tax advisors as well as an attorney or CPA who is knowledgeable with 1031 Exchanges. Make sure that your real estate professional knows you plan to conduct an exchange and be sure that he or she is familiar not only with the process but also with the specific documentation and time frame mandated by the IRS.

Kroger plans mega store in Bonsack area

A giant in the grocery business plans to spread its footprint into a growing area of Roanoke County.

Kroger officials said Friday that the company will build its largest Roanoke Valley store on a 22.8-acre site at the corner of Valley Gateway Boulevard and U.S. 460 in the Bonsack area. The 84,000-square-foot store will offer a gas station, as do some other Kroger stores.

The Cincinnati-based chain is pumping $22.4 million into the development of this grassy site, which is near Integrity Windows, a large manufacturer of windows and doors that opened several years ago.

Other retails shops and restaurants are planned adjacent to the new store. Four additional outparcels, for lease or for sale, would front U.S. 460.

Kroger will own the retail center, having purchased the land from Fralin & Waldron, a Roanoke real estate company. more
