Letters: Auto loans will provide hope

January 8th, 2009 by loveblogging

In the 1970s, it loaned billions of dollars to Penn Central Railroad, Lockheed and Franklin National Bank. In the 1980s, it aided Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust as well as Chrysler, which paid the loan back promptly and with interest. Within the last year, it has given hundreds of billions of dollars to Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, American International Group and Citigroup. Chrysler and General Motors have been loaned a measly $17.4 billion. If Bear Stearns can collapse despite a $29 billion loan, how can we expect the auto industry to survive on even less?

Many argue the economy will only get worse if the government continues to give money away. The auto industry is not asking for a gift. We’re asking for a loan that will surely be paid back. It’s the best alternative for our struggling workers. more

Pope Benedict XVI names DiNardo among new cardinals

January 7th, 2009 by loveblogging

Pope Benedict XVI named 23 new cardinals on Wednesday, tapping two Americans, the patriarch of Baghdad, and archbishops from five continents to join the elite ranks of the “princes” of the Roman Catholic Church.

The two Americans include Archbishop Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston. He is joined by Archbishop John Foley, a longtime Vatican official who was recently named grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, a lay religious community that aims to protect the rights of the Roman Catholic Church in the Holy Land.

DiNardo’s nomination was considered something of a surprise and appeared to be an indication of Benedict’s desire to reach out to the large Latino community in Texas. He was only named archbishop last year after serving as coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston in Texas.

Sports Betting Success

January 5th, 2009 by loveblogging

Late last year I decided to take my interest in Sports betting a little further and check out some potential systems.

If you do this you’ll find many many downloads cross your path. Mostly in the form of ebooks. The majority promise riches beyond your wildest dreams and feed on the soft spot many of us have for paying of debts and having those dream holidays.

This majority of course are pish and piffle or absolute tripe or more crudely “bollocks”!!

I purchased a few anyway just to see what they had to offer and to my surprise I did get a few useful ideas about developing systems and covering bets as I’d been doing it as a hobby on betfair for a while anyway. The individual systems used solely on their own though all fell flat on their fantasy filled asses.

All in all not much money spent and a couple of new ideas spawned from having a bit of knowledge in the first place, and a little wiser about the clearly paper thin claims about what you “will” win.

In December 2008 I came across one called Sports Betting Champ. He like all the others had a fabulously convincing argument to sign up. The usual bank sheet was there filled with cash and several testimonials to the systems.

The credentials did seem a little better as the chap professed to being a Statistician. You or I though could easily set up a website and profess to being a brain surgeon or rocket scientist. His past rate of wins looked good but again how do you check?

For me the thing that made me check it out was the price. It wasn’t the usual $29 dollars or less but a decent amount to purchase albeit refundable. Much higher than any I’d seen. That’s a bit mad I thought so I decided to check out any reviews on this. All seemed pretty good, some obviously just giving you the good stuff and some more like this one, I hope, with a sensible approach.

I consider myself pretty competent at finding stuff on the net but not one bad review could I find about this. I even lost interest and then tried again a few weeks later. Still not one.

In the end I thought what the hell I’ll give one more expensive looking one a go and if need be take the refund.

Now I started of and stayed very tight with this keeping to a nice small bank that wouldn’t hurt much when lost. Starting in January I won the first few but kept the bets low.
This is the bit that hurts. My first loss on this system came at the beginning of June!!

Needless to say I’m impressed. You don’t even need to work out your bets using the system your sent. Just sign up for the chaps picks and he’ll email them to you as they come up.

If your worried simply get the system and check the success without betting. My advice would be to plan how you’ll win back the very occasional loss over the subsequent bets and off you go.

All in all go for it.

A classic schoolyard acronym prompted one of the most spirited exchanges during a recent state legislative hearing about healthcare issues.

When the General Assembly’s Health Finance Commission convened a meeting last Tuesday in Gary, State Rep. Charlie Brown demanded Family and Social Services Administration Secretary Mitch Roob explain inconsistency about the name of a new state health program.

“In the bill passed by the General Assembly, the program was called the Indiana Check-Up Plan,” Brown said. “Now, in material being sent out by your office, the program is being referred to as the Healthy Indiana Plan. There is mass confusion about which health plan people are dealing with.”

“I don’t like the name Indiana Check-Up Plan,” Roob replied. “The acronym for that plan is ‘I-C-U-P.’ That acronym is awkward, at best.”

January 3rd, 2009 by loveblogging

MEXICO - After being freed from the Androscoggin County Jail without bail, Norman “Bo” Thompson went on a six-day crime spree before being arrested following a 14-hour standoff at his mother’s Oxford Street home, police said this week.

Before the standoff, Mexico officers were looking for Thompson, 35, of Mexico and Lewiston, in connection with a Pearl Street burglary, Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said.

Thompson has since been charged with that crime, where Hodsdon said Thompson took an estimated $10,000 in property from the home, including televisions, computers, phones, lamps, food and beer.

“He cleaned out the house. That’s why we were looking for him,” Hodsdon said.

Thompson has also been charged with theft, criminal mischief and violating conditions of release.

WASHINGTON — Lonnie Bowen Jr. was once a social worker, but for 17 years the Vietnam war veteran has slept on the streets off and on as he’s battled substance abuse and mental health problems.

“It’s been a hard struggle,” said Bowen, 62, as he rolled a cigarette outside a homeless processing center in downtown Philadelphia, where he planned to seek help for his drug and alcohol problem, as he has before.

Here comes the documentary

December 31st, 2008 by loveblogging

“Israeli Wedding,” which airs on Yes Docu tomorrow, is reminiscent of many British and American series that follow couples in the course of their wedding preparations.

“Bridezilla” is perhaps the best known among these shows. It is another type of reality series, which is more docu-reality than documentary. This show is not like “Wife Swap,” or “Supernanny”; there is no intervention for entertainment purposes.

These kinds of series raise questions concerning television ethics. In the British and American shows, viewers peer into the lives of people at an incredibly tense moment, and derive pleasure from the sense that they are better than them.

The docu-reality, about weddings is especially problematic, because it concludes with a happy ending and thereby sanctifies the institution. more
